What is The New Age?

The so called New Age movement is an Umbrella term for a wide and varied collection of practices and beliefs that cover everything from buddhism to wicca. There is no creed, no organized body and more often than not, the groups and societies within the movement differ so much its difficult to see why they are all lumped together at all. In fact the entire notion of a unified movement as a new religion is deeply flawed as there are huge disparities  between the groups associated with it. However, It can also be said that there are many similarities too. One of the unifying aspects would be that the practice of meditation. Of course meditation is not a new age discovery, it has its roots in the ancient yoga  practices of  hinduism and buddhism both of which in turn have influenced the new age movement with their beliefs in reincarnation and the impermanence of the soul. It is these philosophies, drawn from the east that have come to characterize the new age  movement. People may often think these beliefs were born out of the love and peace counter culture days of the mid to late sixties, with images of  Hare Krishna devotees, bright colours, hippies meditating amidst the smoke of incense and sitar music and the free love spirit abounding the rock music festivals. The roots of this spiritual    movement go back much further however, to the last quarter of the 19th century when a mysterious woman named Helena  Blavatsky popularised in the west through The Theosophical Society, the wisdom of the eastern philosophies. Her instructions came from a group of Ascended Masters, beings that she claimed were extremely advanced in their karmic evolution that they could manifest from the more subtle spiritual realms of existence, down on to the earth plane. There are numerous people on Earth today, claiming contact with these Ascended Masters, or beings with a similar description to Helena Blavatsky's teachers. Its is from this time then, this  movement was born. But that is only the beginning of a very long and interesting story with many twists and turns, as we shall see.
